I’m guess this gave someone the idea when iOS 4.3 Beta came out with the 4-5 finger pinch to home feature. This could also be Apple just testing out these features for future devices down the line. The new hand gestures that Apple implemented into iOS 4.3 Beta do take away the need of a physical home button. You can swipe up to bring up the switcher and also swipe through backgrounded apps side by side.
